Artists Statement
For my Self Portrait Propaganda poster project, I wanted to recreate the infamous Marie Antoinette quote. During the French Revolution she was ignorant of the working classes despairs and allegedly said "Let them eat cake". However, over time that has been disproven and considered as fake news spread by gossip at the time. I was inspired by Sofia Cappola's autobiographical movie on Marie Antoinette. In the movie there is a scene where Marie is discussing with her servants some of the dramatized nonsense that is being spread in her name, one of them being "Let them eat cake! that's such nonsense I would never say that!"
I thought it would be a clever hidden message to include in my poster, to symbolize being yourself and not let other people's opinion bring you down because people are going to talk about you regardless. As well as I wanted it to play into the working-class struggle and ironically serve as a reminder that poverty should not be ignored but instead helped.
I wanted my portrait to be in a picture frame to give it an old touch. The colors used in my project were picked from Baroque art which was popular during the 17th century.
